Supporting Australian Defence Force members is a key focus area for the Prince’s Charities Australia.
The Prince’s Lead Your Own Business program (PLYOB) is a hands-on training program developed specifically to assist Australian Defence members in-transition out of the Defence Force and into business careers.
Delivered in partnership with RMIT University, the nationally-accredited course in business management equips transitioning Defence Force members with the skills they need to start their own business.
The tailored 12-18 month program involves producing a business proposal, online learning and assessments and an intensive residential at RMIT University in Melbourne. It also matches participants with business leaders as mentors.
His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has taken an active interest in the design process of the program, which was launched as a pilot in 2015. His Royal Highness has remained highly engaged in the program since taking an interest in its design. Several of the program participants have corresponded with His Royal Highness and many were able to meet him during His Australian tour in November 2015 to personally speak with him about their business’s progress. In 2016, His Royal Highness recorded a special video message for participants, which was shared with them during the residential in July.
The PLYOB program is receiving outstanding feedback from participants, program partners and mentors alike.
With growing interest, it is set to transform the lives of many transitioning Defence Force personnel as they embark on new careers in business.

“The support, experience and knowledge provided through this program is without question the difference between operating a highly successful business and potentially becoming one of the statistics. This is an opportunity you will not get anywhere else. It’s not just the course learnings – it’s the networks, the personal mentors with decades of business experience, and the support all the way through the program and post-program that really matter.”
